Data center protest in Washington

By Taylor James, Editor

Protesters organized on Jan. 18 at the Bank of Washington in Downtown to protest a proposed data center coming to Diamond Farms.

Protest Organizer Cierra Skiles talked about the reason for protesting.

There hasn’t been a decision yet, the rezoning will be discussed at the commissioners meeting on Monday and this is the point where public input matters. The goal is transparency and making sure the community is heard before a permanent change is made. Once rezoning starts, it’s very hard to go back. However, there is no vote on this and very little chance to speak publicly. We need our voices to be heard concerning the environmental, health, and financial concerns this will bring to our area,” said Skiles.

The proposed data center is expected to built on 575 acres owned by the Eckelkamp family, which owns the Bank of Washington.

The data center is expected to be brought into discussion during the Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 20 at 400 E Locust Union, in the second floor.
