High Expectations for the ‘Housemaid’

By Taylor Greife, CUSP Editor

The Housemaid, a psychological thriller novel written by Freida McFadden, is taking on the silver screen with its film adaptation this December.

The novel had its big break on Book Tok and became McFadden’s bestselling book. The film is directed by Paul Reig with A-list executive producers, Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, who also stars in the film as Nina and Millie. The casting for this movie couldn’t be more perfect. According to People Magazine the President of production for the Lionsgate Motion Picture group, Erin Westerman says, “They’re [Seyfried and Sweeney] both mysterious, nuanced, and incredibly skilled at becoming characters
who don’t reveal everything right away.”

Psychological thrillers are supposed to make viewers think and leave them with questions. I’m confident that this cast can execute it beautifully. The actor playing Andrew Winchester, Brandon Sklenar, is exactly who I had pictured while reading the novel. Andrew is mysterious, charming, and
a stereotypical golden boy. Sklenar is the perfect actor for this role and I’m excited to see how he pulls this off.
Book to movie adaptations can be a hit or miss with viewers. Sometimes the
films can give the viewers something they
didn’t get in the novel and other times they completely fumble with the film. For example, Sklenar’s best known role as Atlas in It Ends with Us wasn’t received well by the people who read the novel and watched the film. However, the film adaptation of the book The Outsiders was incredibly successful.
Viewers seem to have faith in the production and believe that the film is
going to be great.
