Some horror movies go for cheap thrills, some go for big monsters, but Dave Franco’s new film Together does something way nastier — it traps a couple inside their own relationship, literally. What starts as a quiet couple drama turns into full-on body horror, and it’s gross, funny, sad, and honestly kind of awesome. It’s basically “ I love you and we have disagreements but now were together forever “
There’s only like two real jump scares, which isn’t a lot, but honestly, who cares? The movie leans heavy on body horror, and the effects are the kind of stuff that makes you gag while thinking “how the hell and why did they film this?” Lips stuck together, skin stretching, and faces half melting into each other. It’s disgusting, hilarious, and somehow I couldn’t look away. Made me check my own arms to make sure I wasn’t getting stuck too.
The acting is what keeps it from being just gross-out chaos. Franco and Alison Brie are believable as a couple falling apart, and the fact that they’re married in real life makes it hit even weirder. It’s like watching a couple fight and then get stuck in a giant sex burrito for two hours. I don’t know how they did it without punching each other.
But it’s not just gore — there’s symbolism too. Being literally stuck together is a messed-up way of showing how relationships can feel, where closeness turns into actual hell. And by the end, when they merge into one body, it’s gross but love changes you, sometimes in ways that suck, sometimes in ways that make you grow; and sometimes in ways that make you question ever getting intimate with anyone again.
Some parts drag, and a couple lines were too obvious, but overall it’s original enough that I didn’t care. It’s the kind of horror that sticks with you, not because it scares you the most, but because it’s so messed up and ridiculous. Besides two jumpscares the most fear I felt was having to keep my eyes open and being in the movie theatre alone. So yeah, Together isn’t perfect, but it’s bold, nasty, and grosser than it first looks. If you’re into body horror that makes you squirm and laugh at the same time, this one’s worth watching to me.
